 As a professional psychotherapist, I know the value of consistently practicing social work values. I use a client-centered approach, utilize problem-solving interventions, and collaborate with individuals and families to ensure that the treatment goals are appropriate and mutually agreed upon. In order for us to achieve the goals you are seeking, we start where you are at right now, incorporating family of origin information, past and current relationship issues, biological and medical, and overall life stressors. A SET CHANCE is named after my partners in the business Chance and Set.

For over 20 years I have been providing services in the mental health field to children, adolescents, adults,geriatrics and families. In my work with clients, my goal is to create a warm, relaxed and accepting environment, whether the challenge is an immediate crisis or an ongoing issue.

Working in this field for many years has enriched my understanding of the capacity we all have to improve our lives if given A SET CHANCE.

I have worked in hospitals, residential treatment programs, mental health facilities , community corrections, outpatient substance abuse programs and equine facilitated programs . I have had extensive experience working with adults, geriatric and adolescents with substance abuse issues, eating disorders, body image issues, grief, anxiety, depression and behavioral problems.The therapeutic models I use in my practice are not limited to but include:  Family Systems Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Solution-Focused Therapy, Structural Therapy and Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy.  I am often eclectic and integrative within different psychological theories that best meet the need and I will never stop improving, and are continuing to expand my offerings based on how I can best serve the southern West Virginia area.



Why horses?


Horses are a lot like humans in that they are social creatures and prefer to be with their peers. They have defined roles within their herds. They have distinct individual personalities, attitudes, and moods. At times, they seem stubborn and defiant, or happy and playful. An approach that seems to work with one horse does not necessarily work with another much like therapy offered traditionally in a room. In other words, horses provide vast opportunities for metaphorical learning. Using metaphors, in discussion or activity, is an effective technique when working with even the most challenging individuals or groups.

In addition to the unique power of horses, the setting in which EAP takes place contributes to its effectiveness. Instead of being closed in by four walls, participants can experience nature, it’s beauty and it’s unpredictability. This freedom and lack of conventional structure stimulates growth and learning. Defenses are quickly eliminated and clinical issues emerge as participants interact and complete tasks with the horses.
